STRANGLES

NAKED CHOKE

Don’t get too excited no clothes come off during the execution of this technique, it’s called that because it in a simple choke using your arm only (disappointed? Take a look at the guys in the photo – its better this way J).  There are two ways to perform this, firstly with your fore arm across the front of your opponent's neck and pressed against his wind pipe (Figure 1) and secondly, with the crook of your elbow directly in front of his wind pipe (Figure 2).  In both cases you should stand close behind him to prevent him from moving back.  Ensure that you push up against the back of his head and neck so that there is no room to move.  To execute the choke grip the hand that is across his neck with your other hand and pull straight back.  The action should be on the wind pipe at the front of his neck, and so when using your elbow (Figure 2) do not squeeze tight at the sides of his neck – just pull back

Fig 2. Choking Using The
Crook of the Elbow

The principle difference between the two methods is that using the fore arm (Figure 1) is faster acting and if applied harshly could cause permanent damage to the wind pipe. Using the crook of the elbow (Figure 2) is less likely to crush the wind pipe and is therefore safer to practice during martial arts training. The recipient may cough if he tries to breathe or talk while his wind pipe is restricted. Once the pressure is taken off after applying this technique the wind pipe will return to its normal shape and breathing will return to normal.

In its application it is not always possible to get behind someone, however this is not necessary to perform this choke.  If your opponent is against a wall or on his back on the floor then you simple need to apply your fore arm across the front of his neck and push.  Alternatively, you can provide your own restriction at the back of his neck.  For instance, if you are on the floor flat on your back with your attacker on top of you (say trying to strangle you) instead of trying to push him away as expected you could pull him towards you, put one forearm across the back of his neck and the other one across the front and then clamp them together. If necessary grab the elbow of your arm that is in front with the hand that is behind for leverage.
