GROUND DEFENSES

1. Approaching Through The Legs - Arm Lock with Leg

In this case while you are in the prone position the attacker tries to strangle you by approaching between your legs (Figure 1). As he reaches forward grab his right wrist ensuring that his palm stays face down. Lift your right foot and place it on the attackers left knee (you might need to shuffle away from him a bit to do this) (Figure 2).

Next, push with your right leg in order to slide his leg from under him. He should drop (or elegantly slide) to the floor next to you (Figure 3). To make sure that he does not go too far and try to escape hold his hand in to you. Take his right hand in a small circle as he slides, so that his hand ends with his palm facing upwards. Continue to pull on his arm to ensure that it is straight.

Finally, lift your left leg up over his arm and position your knee over his elbow to prepare for an arm lock. Then apply upward pressure on his wrist with your hands and downward pressure on his elbow with your leg (Figure 4).

This should be followed by lots of frantic tapping on your leg or the mat in class, or a snapping sound and screaming if done in the street. If not then try again it may take a couple of tries.

(Hopefully, if ever you need this in the street you have practiced in class because it can be difficult to get right first time).  When practicing one thing you do need to take note of is the fact that you have less sensitivity and control in your leg and so when applying an arm lock with your leg you need to take it slow and easy until you get used to it.
